Pentothum PDF Print E-mail

The Pentothum is an arrangement of the 3" large dragon set . In the piece to the right, the largest chime is just under 2 metres.

The name is short for a pentatonic humming totem pole

The length of the chimes means that they low pitched. This is a powerful but quiet sound, the listener must be within a 12 inches to really appreciate it. Striking the chime in this mode will produce a resonance that can last 60-90 seconds. With the tuning in a pentatonic scale, striking more than one can generate melody or a pleasing wash of combinations of notes or a full five note chord.

There is a sense of 'feeling' the sound from this instrument and the movement of the bar is visible on the longer bars. The nodes are clearly visible on the larger chimes.

These chimes also give off other frequencies (partials) and timbres of sounds depending on what implement is used to strike them. The partials will all be harmonic with the fundamental tuning and can be added when the bars are vibrating in full Low mode. Children can run around the bars hitting them with their fingers or any implement. With your ears 6" away, the sound is incredible
